abh3 u.S. Navy
I'm a U.S. Navy Veteran. In 1986, I joined the U.S. Navy to be an ABH, which was a yellow shirt aircraft director on the flight deck of an aircraft carrier. That was the most fun and most rewarding position I have ever held. I would still be doing that job today if I could. In 1989, I was faced with re-enlistment, or getting out of active duty and proceeding in the U.S. Navy reserve duty for the next 3 years. Since I had one year of college before joining the Navy, I decided to go into the reserves, where I could return to my home town and finish my decree at my Henderson State University. My goal was to finish my degree and re-enter the Navy through officer candidate school and then on to becoming a Navy fighter pilot. Unfortunately, at that time, our government was downsizing the military, and for the next 8 years, it was very difficult to get back in, if at all. I sought out careers in the FBI and CIA as well, but the recruiters all said the same thing, with shrinkage in the government, they were taking new applications, but were not processing any new applicants. While I was finishing my degree, I worked in a furniture factory at night, so that I could attend college full time during the day. With the supervisory experience I received in the Navy, a career in furniture manufacturing management was born.
